Excuses! Excuses! Excuses!

By Michelle Szames

According to the dictionary, an excuse is an explanation that frees one from fault or blame. When it comes to exercise, I have heard it all.

The following are examples of common excuses that 80% of us fool ourselves into believing that we are different from the rest and there really isn’t a way to make exercise fit into their life. The truth is….EXERCISING YOUR BODY WILL CHANGE YOUR HEALTH, ENERGY LEVEL AND WELL BEING FOR THE BETTER.

Excuse #1: I am too busy and just cannot fit exercise into my schedule. Every second of my day is accounted for with work, commute and family. I just DO NOT have the time to work out.
Rebuttal –Remember that your body is the only vessel that you get in this lifetime and if you don’t take the time to take care of it you most likely will have consequences down the road. We are all busy. If you are too busy, you need to rearrange your schedule.

Excuse #2: I’m too tired.
Rebuttal – Exercising gives you more energy. It may be a struggle at first, but just push yourself to go for only 15 minutes. You may find that you feel energized and happier immediately.

Excuse #3: I hate going to the gym because I’m so out of shape.  Everyone at the gym looks great and I can feel them staring at my out of shape, sorry-looking body.
Rebuttal - That is very doubtful. The “in shape” people at the gym are usually looking at themselves in the mirror and watching their form.

Excuse #4: I have to quit smoking before I start an exercise program. I’m scared to quit smoking because I will gain weight.
Rebuttal – Quit that immediately! One life, one body, love yourself enough to give yourself the life you deserve.

Excuse #5: I have a bad back or had knee surgery so I cannot exercise.
Rebuttal – Talk to your doctor and then look for a swimming pool in your area. Strengthening your muscles surrounding your injury will help you tremendously.

Excuse #6: I don’t like to exercise.
Rebuttal – Pick something that you like to do then hire a personal trainer, recruit a friend or take a class. It is so much more enjoyable to exercise with someone there rooting for you and sharing in your experience.

Excuse #7: I’m too old for exercise.
Rebuttal – Exercise if important for all age groups, young and old. As you age, it is even more important to keep your bones strong and weight bearing exercise does just that.

Excuse #8: Exercising makes me feel sick.
Rebuttal – See your doctor.

Excuse #9: I’m going to start next Monday.
Rebuttal – Find a reason to start immediately and do not put it off any longer. Stick to that.

Excuse #10: My grandma smoked, drank, ate fatty foods, didn’t exercise a day of her life and she lived to be 95 years old.
Rebuttal – That is great for your grandma. Is that the example that you want to set for your family and friends?

What are your excuses? Take a closer look and admit what they are…EXCUSES.

Drop the excuses!
LOVE YOUR BODY!
The results are worth it!

Be sure to consult with your doctor before starting any exercise program.
